Trig Life Services & Corporate Health Systems teamed up on Sunday to run the Minneapolis Half Marathon & Marathon Relay in honor of Devon Knapp, the son of CHS Benefit Administrator Tammy Knapp. Devon, age 5, was diagnosed with leukemia on December 24th of last year and has been undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatments ever since.
Collectively known as “Team Devon,” the half marathon team (pictured above), with help from coworkers and volunteers, raised over $8,600 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) through the Team in Training program. Devon’s grandmother, Joanne Wacker (pictured on far right), was one of the Team Devon runners and was thrilled to see her grandson at the finish line. In her words:
“I was worried that I was not going to be able to make it 13 miles or that it would be a huge struggle. But from the start of the race, my first thought was Devon. My inspiration was the courage and strength of those battling cancer, and I thought of that every time I passed someone in a purple shirt. It was really cool.”
Also included on Team Devon are the volunteers from CHS and Trig who organized the Devon Knapp Benefit in April to raise money for LLS and the Knapp family. The benefit was held at the Country Inn & Suites in Chanhassen, MN, and featured casino games, a silent auction, raffle items and more. The event was a huge success and raised over $8,000 for both causes.
Devon continues to undergo aggressive chemotherapy and physical therapy to keep his little body strong and fighting. His next phase of chemo begins on June 8th. To read more about his progress, you can visit his CaringBridge site and check out the journal that Joanne updates regularly.
THANK YOU to all of the runners, volunteers, friends and family members who helped support this cause. Your dedication, generosity and compassion are very much appreciated. Hopefully – one day – we will find a cure!
